STYLE GUIDE

  • Format: Contributions should be written with MS Word (.DOC OR .DOCX). Pdfs and other formats are liable to be rejected without consideration.

    • For the main text please use Times New Roman 12 points, for notes and bibliography 10 points.

    • Use endnotes, not footnotes.

    • No empty line between paragraphs or sections.

    • Subheadings are to be in bold and preceded by a blank line.

    • Initial paragraphs are not indented (including those immediately following a subheading).  All subsequent paragraphs are indented.

    • If your paragraph has a , please insert an empty line before the headline.

    • Use single inverted commas for ‘scare quotes’ but double inverted commas for citing speech, text or titles of articles in the body of your contribution.  For example: the ‘young’ Tibetologist Austine Waddell characterises Tibetan mysticism as “a silly mummery of unmeaning jargon and ‘magic circles’”.

    • Do NOT use page numbers or headers/footers.

  • Font: Please use Times New Roman.

  • Spelling: The author may use either English or American spelling preferences, provided only one style is used throughout the manuscript (exclusive of bibliography).

  • Capitalization: Authors should be consistent in their use of capitalization. Overcapitalization should be avoided. The abbreviations ‘vol.,’ ‘no.,’ and ‘pt.’ are not normally capitalized.

  • Italics: The titles of works and periodicals should normally be italicized. Foreign words should only be italicized if there is risk of confusion with an identically spelled English word; if the word is being cited by the author; or if the word is likely to be unfamiliar to readers (in this last case, only the first appearance of the word in the text should be italicized). Foreign words employed by the author instead of translations, and familiar words and phrases in a foreign language should be set in Roman type. Latin scholarly terms and abbreviations (with the exception of sic) are not italicized.

  • Double initials (e.g. V.S. Taskin) should NOT have a space between them. Thus, V. S. is wrong, V.S. is correct.

Transcription: To maintain consistency, the journal has made decisions for particular spellings for various proper nouns common in Mongolian Studies that have common variants.
