The Mongolia Society Exists to Serve

Since 1961, The Mongolia Society has been a valuable resource for researchers, educators, and those interested in the language, history, and culture of the Mongolian people throughout the United States and around the world. 

THE SOCIETY’S ONGOING ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

PUBLICATIONS

  • The flagship academic journal Mongolian Studies, Journal of The Mongolia Society, published annually;

  • The Mongol Survey, an online newsletter of news and events published once or twice a year.

  • Occasional Papers, scholarly monographs and translations of important historical works; and

  • Special Papers, works in Mongolian Classical or Vertical Script.

MEETINGS & CONFERENCES

  • The Society organizes an annual meeting, often in conjunction with other academic organizations, such as The Association of Asian Studies. Annual meetings include scholarly paper presentations, book sales, membership discussions, and opportunities to meet fellow Society members.

  • The Society’s Annual Meeting in 2019, held in Denver, Colorado, included visits by the Mongolian Honorary Consul James Wagenlander, members of the Mongol American Cultural Association (MACA), and opening remarks by His Excellency Ambassador Yondon Otgonbayar, Mongolian Ambassador to the U. S.

ACADEMIC LECTURES

  • The Society regularly sponsors scholarly lectures and roundtable discussions on or near the campus of Indiana University, Bloomington.

  • Recent events included:

    • the lecture “The Mongols and the Sea,” by the historian Dr. Morris Rossabi, Senior Scholar and adjunct professor at Columbia University and Distinguished Professor of History at Queens College;

    • the lecture “The Mighty Géluk: their Emergence and Domination in Khalkha Mongolia,” by the curator and art historian Dr. Uranchimeg Tsultem, assistant professor and Edgar and Dorothy Fehnel Chair in International Studies at the Herron School of Art & Design, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis; and

    • a roundtable discussion about Mongolian music with discussants from Mongolia and the United States and performances by Mongolian musicians.

HOLIDAY & SPECIAL CELEBRATIONS

The Society also regularly organizes gatherings for its members throughout the year to mark important events and holidays, including celebrations of the annual Tsagaan Sar (the Mongolian Lunar New Year) and Naadam Festival; gatherings of local regional chapters, such as the Society’s Greater Washington D.C. Chapter (Facebook) and events sponsored by the Mongolian Embassy to the United States.

WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

As a not-for-profit organization, The Mongolia Society relies on membership fees and donations to support all of the activities and resources it offers to its members and the broader community of Mongolians and Mongolian Studies scholars in the United States.

The Society is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization under the Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3) and thus all donations and gifts large and small are tax-deductible (for US taxpayers).

The Society welcomes gifts from individuals who include it in their will, trust, retirement plan, life insurance policy, or other such account. We are also honored to accept memorials or honorariums.
